The Señora Trust – Restoration Project
Classic yacht ‘Señora’ to be restored for a whole community to benefit from and enjoy
At the beginning of March, Señora was in danger of being scrapped. Now with over £10,000 raised through an online appeal, they are planning her triumphant arrival in Sunderland later this year. The project will not only restore the vessel back to her former glory, but also bring skills and opportunities to the local community.
It is hoped the restoration will enable the Trust’s twenty-four trainees to gain qualifications in boatbuilding and carpentry, all learned through the process of restoring a classic yacht. The Trust, supporters and sponsors also have future plans to set up community interest companies in Sailing and Boatbuilding.
Señora was built for a wealthy man and in her long life has given pleasure to the powerful, the famous, as well as serving in both World Wars! Whilst the biggest impact will be for the trainees gaining new skills, qualifications and jobs; she will become the people’s yacht to be loved and enjoyed by thousands, of all ages and all backgrounds as they learn to sail on her.
